What to Do On the Last Day of Vacation
In a frenzy of “oh my, vacation’s over and I haven’t done half of what I wanted to”, I have done the following today.
Set up new rules and mailboxes in my Mail.
Created practice pages for each student on their wikis.
Made a template wiki page for them to copy & got together some instructions for them.
Downloaded and edited the lessons in this free typing thingy (simply webpages and javascripts) for the 3rd graders first typing class tomorrow.
(It’s kind of wacky, but delightfully simple and now completely under my control, just the way I like it.)
Decided on the next unit (Early Readers and Chapter Books) and first book (Catwings) for the Primary class.
Registered with a hosting company (and got an amazing deal!) for a new site.
Installed Wordpress.
Found a new skin, but I have to wait for the DNS to resolve in order to install it, sigh.
Checked in on the status of my free books from JLG.
Upgraded Cyberduck.
Blogged.
Got some new sneakers.
ahhhhh.
each student a wiki? you’re so awesome.
i’m a huge ursula k fan but am a little scared of catwings. maybe if i was 7?

I am intrigued — what is scary about Catwings? Do you mean teaching it? I have never seen the end of the Wizard of Oz because I can’t get past the flying monkeys even though my daughter assures me that, in the book, they are really GOOD monkeys under an evil spell. But Catwings? With the uber-cute kitten who says “Meee” all that time?
I agree that Pam is awesome though.

Judging books strictly by thier covers, and by your admission Kate, I am scared of the “uber-cute”-ness. But I promise to browse one the next time I am in the children’s library.

well, gosh darn it. They had already read the darned cute thing in class. Had to do a quick switcheroo and read Commander Toad cold.

Remember Caleb, it’s Ursula LeGuin — you can trust her, she’s not going to go all Disney on you.
Good call, Pam — that refrain of “We already read that!” brings on a real sinking sensation. Someday, when we’ve eliminated world hunger and I’m organized, I’m going to have an Emergency Books collection for that kind of situation, among others.
