Free Premium PBWiki

Posted by Surrural Librarian on Aug 13 2008 | Wikis

PBWiki is giving away free Premium wikis for the year to librarians & teachers. Those premium wikis are usually $250 value, so that’s a bargain. Cheapskate that I am, I only use the free version, but I did have a free upgrade last year and it was pretty swell.

This is a great time to add wikis to your curriculum, kind of like taking your first plane ride in first class!

Games for Idle Hands

Posted by Surrural Librarian on Aug 11 2008 | puzzles

Last year I made some scavenger hunts & crossword puzzles to have on hand for students who finished early in class. It went so well, this year I’ve decided I need plenty more to keep those quick deciders busy during checkout time.

Since I spent some rainy hours making these I figured it would be worthwhile sharing them. If you want to make your own, I recommend puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com. Feel free to adopt, copy or use these as is at your peril. If you find any mistakes or typos, or would like to share your puzzles with me, please leave a comment.

I’ll add more as I get them together.

For Vermonters: Here’s a zip file of DCF crossword puzzles & a word search and here’s a zip of a few Red Clover puzzles.

And for everyone else, here are some mystery author puzzles (title & name scrambles) and a genre puzzle, all zipped up for your downloading pleasure.

More Crafty Links for Handy Librarians

Posted by Surrural Librarian on Aug 09 2008 | Libraries, Simple Fun

Here’s another short list of links for the crafty among you…

These handmade fabric bookmarks and these made from chopstick wrappers would be great for keeping third-grade hands busy during longer read-alouds.

These very cute bookplates would be a nice giveaway.

Decorate your library walls with a cool inexpensive vinal wall decals (buy one of their designs or customize your own) or go low-rent and maybe just a little bit edgy with the Rasterbater which is not nearly as bad as it sounds. “The Rasterbator creates huge, rasterized images from any picture. Upload an image, print the resulting multi-page pdf file and assemble the pages into extremely cool looking poster up to 20 meters in size”

And if your handwriting is as bad as mine, Wordle can help jazz up your displays. Here’s a title cloud I made for my DCF display:
